I am coming very late to the party when it comes to Kevin Kwan's Crazy Rich Asians. I had heard that people loved the book and that it was a must read but everytime that it was described to me as a girl who goes to Singapore and her boyfriend happens to be the most eligible bachelor of one of Asia's richest families I never seemed that drawn to it. Now I am felt with remorse and regret for not grabbing Crazy Rich Asians sooner as it has to be one of the best contemporary books I have read in years.
As much as Crazy Rich Asians follows the main protagonist Rachel Chu and her boyfriend Nicholas Young, Kwan has created a beautiful web of fully developed characters that you quickly become attached to either out of love, disgust or utter awe. Kwan, who grew up in Singapore before moving to New York, offers an honest glimpse into the lived of the Crazy Rich, the outlandish spending, the luxury and a world that only one percent of the one percent will ever experience.
Intelligently written, filled with wit and enjoyable from one word to the next I can't recpmmend this book enough. I feel as though I am constantly telling my friends to pick up a copy and read it. As I said before they are both some of the best contemporary fiction I have read, though they may be dismissed as light hearted they deal with real human emotion in an honest way and explores the relationships between family memebers in a way that I have never seen before. The fashion, the locations and the lifestyles are luxurious but are not the focus, they all are backdrops to the relationships that we can all relate to-just better looking.
I quickly devoured both books and recommend buying both as when you finish Crazy Rich Asians you will be wanting more and China Rich Girlfriend definitely delivers. My only complaint is that there is not yet another, putting good vibes out to Kevin Kwan for a third. Crazy Rich Asians is being made into a film with people paying upward if $200 000 for a walk on cameo, if that is not a testament to how good these books are I don't know what else could be.
