I was introduced to JENNY BIRD about two years ago and fell in love with the Toronto based jewellery designer's aesthetic of metals and stones interepretted in modern ways, infused with historical references and lots of attitude. The women who wear Bird's jewellery are confident, fashion conscience, and are empowered, which is all reflected in the intellect of the design.
Indigo is Canada's leading book, gift and specialty toy retailer and has expanded into style over the years. I have spent many hours perusing the aisles of Indigo stores falling in love with the books and beautiful collections of trinkets curated by their team. And I stand by my recommendation that it is one of the best places to take someone on a date (they almost always have a Starbucks) because you can tell a lot about someone by what they read and what they like. Indigo has carried select pieces from Jenny Bird's eponymous line and to the delight of many Bird girls (name given by the designer to those who adorn themselves with her pieces) and they have now collaborated for an Indigo.ca exclusive Jenny Bird X Indigo collection titled "Modern Pearl".
At some point in every woman's life I feel that she will discover a love for pearls, be that her grandmother's or unexpectedly in a store. I have always had a love for vintage. I started exploring vintage stores as a teen and would collect pearl necklaces, often layering them or wrapping them around my wrists. As I got older I was fell in love with the fashion of the 60s and 70s and began collecting maxi's and large pieces of statement jewellery made of amber but I never got over my love affair with pearls and this reinterpretation by Jenny Bird has reignited the flame.
“When designing, I focused on women who exude a modern, feminine style like Cate Blanchett. Then I asked myself, 'What would Cate want to wear to Paris Fashion Week?'” said Jenny Bird, creative director of JENNY BIRD. “I was given the inspiration of 'a modern romantic' from Indigo. It was such perfect timing with pearls having a moment in fashion jewelry, so I decided to explore blending my brand’s attitude with the sophistication of the pearl. The resulting pieces have this beautiful tension of edge and grace. I'm excited for bird girls across Canada to discover the pieces and make them their own...”
What I love most about this "Modern Pearl" collection form Jenny Bird is the marriage of pearls with modern design and in settings not typically seen with pearls. The collection uses both gold and silver as well as polished metals combined with oversized links and shapes. There is a continuity throughout the line and the pieces compliment each other beautifully. Each piece can easily stand on it's own as a statement piece or be layered and mixed with others. Maybe the most exciting part for any "Bird Girl" is that each piece is under $100, priced between $29-$98CAD. There are so many pieces out of this collection comprised of 14 styles that I would love to have in my personal collection but I have selected my favourites throughout the article(click on the picture for the link). I love the smooth curves and simple pearl details. Click away to Indigo.ca my Bird Girls because this collection will not be around for long.
