Let's start this off light. French Coast by Anita Hughes is the epitome of a beach bag read. It goes down as easily as a one of the french pastries described in the book but, like the pastries, leaves you wanting a bit more sustenance at times.
Starting in San Franciso, we are introduced to Serena, an upcoming young proffesional who has he dream job as a features editor for Vogue and is in her ideal relationship with Chase. Serena is a planner and has her life mapped out, an only child from a succesful political family she has her own life as a succesful independent woman but is about to become the embark on the life long journey of her soon to be fiancee Chase as he follows his political aspirations.
When Serena is offered a dream assignment the story goes to idyllic Cannes, France during the glitz and the glam of the Film Festival. Serena has been asked to scribe the memoirs of the legendary former Editor in Chief of French Vogue, this adds a wonderful dimension to the novel going between modern day and giving a glimpse into the famous sixties and seventies of the Cote D'Azur.
Filled with romantic drama and glamorous fashion, French Coast is pure escapism. At times I found myself rolling my eyes at certain plot points, or over rushed at others but the book is light fun and should be seen as that. I don't expect French Coast to become a classic anytime soon but for the day or two on a beach it takes you to read it you will be in Cannes, the Cote D'Azur of the 60s and loving every page of it.
