TOMS #OneDayWithoutShoes

If you have been reading the site or know me then you know that I am a big believer in giving back in any way that you can, be that in time, money or any other way imaginable. I first heard of TOMS when one of my friends in high school had a pair of the shoes that she had got when she went to a Hansen concert and they were selling them alongside their own merch. It was 2007 and TOMS was not as prominent as they are now but I quickly became enamoured with the shoes and the one for one giving strategy they had in place. At the time TOMS had one of their first One Day Without Shoes and my friend went on the school PA explaining the importance of the day and why we should all go a day without shoes in awareness for those who do not have shoes that we so often take for granted.

This year, Canadians have until this Thursday (May 21) to show their support for TOMS One Day Without Shoes initiative. It’s easy to participate – just post a barefoot photo on Instagram, tag #withoutshoes, and TOMS will donate a pair of shoes to children in need – no purchase necessary. TOMS will donate up to one million pairs of shoes for barefoot photos posted on Instagram between May 5 and May 21 that include the#withoutshoes. One Day Without Shoes calls attention to three key issues that affect a child’s development – health, education and empowerment. At least four million people across 15 countries are affected by podoconiosis, a debilitating disease that causes painful swelling of the feet and legs (Source: WHO, 2013). Providing children with school uniforms, which often include shoes, can increase school attendance by up to 62 per cent. (Source: Evans, 2009)

On May 21st check back on TOMS website to see how many pairs of shoes have been given. Between now and then though, I challenge you, to not only post your own Instagram shot of you #withoutshoes but get your friends and family to do so as well (profile must be public).
