Now I know that Woman Crush Wednesday’s is usually reserved for pop stars, or Queen Bey, or the latest supermodel taking the fashion world by storm, but I want to highlight one of my favourite literary characters-Nancy Drew. Now for those of you who are not familiar with Nancy Drew, and the Emma Roberts version doesn't count, she is the original girl detective developed by a publisher in the 30s and written by a group of authors under the pseudonym Carolyn Keene.

I was first introduced to Nancy Drew when I was 8 years old. It was up at my parents cottage at a beach market and my Mum and older sister suggested I buy 2 books, from the original series, with my coveted allowance. I have become a devoted reader ever since. Though written in a time very different than that of my own, I found Nancy to be aspirational and admirable.

In solving the mysteries Nancy would persevere, use her skills of logic and deduction as well as her fearless attitude to challenge her foes and rally her friends. Nancy Drew Mysteries may seem to be old fashioned and the books are not written in the caliber of literary classics but she will always hold a special place in my heart. As a young girl it was inspiring to read about a young woman solving both mysteries and her own problems with the help of other young women and with confidence. Nancy always dressed well and her titian hair was always done up but she was never dull or played into a stereotype of needing a man’s assistance or intelligence to get things done. Thank you Nancy, I feel that I am in part who I am today because of you.
