Any young woman interested in fashion knows about Nasty Gal and it's CEO-Founder Sophia Amoruso. Amoruso is a self professed #GIRLBOSS and wants you to be one too. Her book has been blowing up the Instagram feeds of fashion bloggers everywhere and, has been on the best seller lists since it came out earlier this year.
I am an avid reader and try to read as much non fiction as I do fiction. Amoruso's book appealed to me as she dominates in both the fashion world as well as business and social media. She was one of the first retailers to make her brand equally about the product as it is about the lifestyle.
I devoured the book in a day, feeling like I was having coffee with that really cool, older girl who has accomplished what I'm setting out to do. Amoruso is shameless and in turn honest about her mistakes she made in her past and how they lead to her success of today. Her story is not of the woman who set out to break a glass ceiling for the sake of breaking the glass ceiling but of the woman who wanted to create something for herself that could have a positive impact on other's lives and in doing so broke the glass ceiling on her way. I like that Amoruso is not bitter. She admits to being bitter of her circumstances at a time but that those circumstances fostered the environment in which she was able to make Nasty Gal what it is today.

A lot of what Amoruso has to say is not new, but it's one thing to say something and another to live it. It's easy to say you are going to change your life and work hard to create the best life for yourself, it's another thing to actually do it. Amoruso's story proved to me something that I already knew and hearing it from her was validating. Hard work is the best way to put the odds of success in your favour. Yes, there are scenarios of right place at the right time but people who are constantly striving and working towards their goals of success are the one's who end up in those right places. All the talent in the world will not give you what you want, you need to apply that talent and set yourself on the right path.

#GIRLBOSS will definitely be a book of encouragement for me going forward, each chapter has accompanying fashion sketches with a quote. The quotes are honest, at times reassuring and at other's the kick in the ass you need. Being a #GIRLBOSS starts in the morning, it's the decision to get up and make what you dreamnt a reality. It's the decision to surround yourself with the right people, to project positivity and stay humble. Most importantly, never giving up on your end goal. Find your weaknesses and make them strengths. Amoruso did not go to a top business school or even college but she makes up for what she didn't learn in academia by self directed learning and surrounding herself with people who do know. She encourages all #GIRLBOSSes to make the best path for themselves. There is no checklist formula and throughout the book there are pages of stories form other #GIRLBOSSes like, Leandra Medine from Manrepeller and Alexi Wasser from IMBOYCRAZY.com.

I recommend #GIRLBOSS to any young woman looking for encouragement and honesty. It's not just for entrepreneurs, it has a great chapters on resume and interview do's and don'ts-something I think everyone can use, as well as lessons about street smarts. It's an easy, non-overwhelming read, great way to end your summer reading and jump start you towards or back to your personal and proffesional goals.
